Ahli falsafah Yunani Purba dan pengkritik adat resam sosial Diogenes dari Sinope direkodkan sebagai hidup dengan banyak anjing, melihat kebebasan daripada kesedaran sendiri dan kenikmatan jujur nikmat fizikal mudah merupakan model peranan yang dikagumkan.

Dalam sebuah rencana dalam New York Times Magazine ateis Natalie Angier menyebut Frans de Waal, seorang ahli primatologi di Universiti Emory:

"Saya telah mempertikaikan bahawa banyak yang dipanggil oleh ahli falsafah sentimen moral boleh dilihat dalam spesies lain. Dalam cimpanzi dan haiwan lain, anda melihat contoh simpati, empati, kesalingan, kesanggupan untuk mengikuti peraturan sosial. Pada 1808 pemuisi Inggeris Pembesar Byron meluahkan fikiran sama dalam puisi terkenalnya Epitaph to a Dog:
